Johan Thijs, CEO of K&H-owner KBC Bank was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Hungarian-Belgian economic relations. The award was presented by H.E. Ambassador Iván Tamás Kovács on 5 May 2022 in the framework of the Flemish-Hungarian Business Reception at the Honorary Consulate in Antwerp.

5 May 2022, a Flemish-Hungarian Business Reception was held at the Honorary Consulate of Hungary in Antwerp, organised by the Foreign Economic Office of the Embassy of Hungary in Brussels. The aim of the event was strengthening Flemish-Hungarian economic relations and exploring new opportunities. During the event, H.E. Ambassador dr. Tamás Iván Kovács presented the investment opportunities, trade and export figures in Hungary for 2021.

On 8 April, at the invitation of H.E. Siegfried Peinen, Ambassador of Belgium to Hungary, and Mr. Koen Haverbeke, General Representative of Flanders in Central Europe, H.E. Ambassador Tamás Iván Kovács attended the concert of Collegium Vocale Gent at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. The concert was followed by a reception.

On 8 April the exhibition “Between Hell and Paradise – The Enigmatic World of Hieronymus Bosch” was inaugurated by H.E. János Áder, President of Hungary, at Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts. At the invitation of dr. László Baán, Director-General of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, H.E. Ambassador Tamás Iván Kovács also attended the opening ceremony.

On the occasion of the centennial anniversary of the Hungarian-Belgian diplomatic relations, H.E. Mr. Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary and H.E. Ms. Sophie Wilmès, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium jointly unveiled the commemorative plaque on the building of the first Brussels diplomatic mission of Hungary under Rue de Florence 5.

Even in the life of a European state such as Hungary with a history of more than a thousand years, 100 years is a considerable period of time. If we look at the events of the last century in European and world history, we can perhaps say that it was the most significant century, and thus undoubtedly a defining 100 years for modern Hungary. The relations between our countries, Hungary and Belgium, are important elements of it. One houndred years ago, on 20th of February 1922, the first mission of Hungary started its operation at Rue de Florence 5 headed by Olivér Woracziczky.

On 11 January 2022, H.E. Ambassador dr. Tamás Iván Kovács participated in a meeting between Orsolya Pacsay-Tomassich, State Secretary for the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy and the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, and Julie Bynens, Secretary General of the Flemish Chancellery and Foreign Affairs Office. The aim of the meeting was to present the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy and to explore the possibilities for Hungarian-Flemish bilateral cooperation.
