Simplified naturalisation

SIMPLIFIED NATURALIZATION

A simplified naturalization application may be submitted by anyone who fully meets the following (combined) conditions for preferential naturalization:

- one of your ancestor was a Hungarian citizen or that ancestor was likely a Hungarian citizen,

OR

- you have been living in a marriage with a Hungarian citizen for at least ten years or you have been married for five years with a Hungarian citizen and you have a child from that marriage,

AND

- you can prove your Hungarian language skills (this will be verified by the body receiving the application),

- you have no criminal record under Hungarian law and no criminal proceedings are pending against you, and

- your naturalisation will not harm Hungary's public security and national security.

A simplified naturalisation application can be submitted only at an appointment, which can be made by e-mail to consulate.bxl@mfa.gov.hu

 

You can also complete the naturalisation application online in the “Konzinfo Ügysegéd” application after registration. You will need to print out the completed application form, which contains a QR code, and bring it with you to the consular office.

The following documents must be submitted with the application:

- naturalisation - re-naturalisation application form (downloadable here);

- data sheet for the registration of births for naturalisation purposes (downloadable here);

- data sheet for the registration of marriages for naturalisation purposes (downloadable here);

- birth certificate in original or certified copy with certified Hungarian translation;

- document proving marital status (married, married or not married): arriage certificate; documents of divorce: final court judgment of divorce with certificate of finality, certified translation in Hungarian; widow: spouse's death certificate)

- documents proving the ascendant's former Hungarian citizenship (e.g. birth, marriage or death certificates of ascendants, but also ecclesial certificates or old Hungarian documents such as residence certificate, school certificate, military record book, etc. ) When proving former Hungarian citizenship, it is important that the family connection, i.e. the line of descent, can be traced. 

Birth certificates must be submitted in the original or as certified copies with a certified translation into Hungarian.

Translations produced by the following authorities are accepted in the simplified naturalisation procedure:

- National Office for Translation and Translation Validation (Országos Fordító és Fordításhitelesítő Iroda - OFFI - www.offi. hu)

- certification can be requested for translations at the competent Hungarian diplomatic mission or consular post in the country where the original document was issued

- for birth certificates from the Member States of the European Union, certified translations into Hungarian made in accordance with the law of the Member State concerned

- for documents issued by Romanian authorities, translators licensed by the Romanian Ministry of Justice

- court translators registered in Serbia

- for documents issued in Ukraine, translations certified by a Ukrainian public notary - translations by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the county chambers of commerce and industry

 

When submitting a simplified naturalisation application, biometric data (photo, fingerprints, signature) are taken.

The President of the Republic of Hungary issues a naturalisation document to the naturalised person. The naturalised person becomes a Hungarian citizen by taking an oath of citizenship. The oath may also be taken at a Hungarian diplomatic mission or consular post of the naturalized person's choice. The place of taking the oath may be changed once before the oath is taken.
