Application for a private passport at the consulate for Hungarian citizens
1.Submission of the application
Applications for a private passport must be submitted in person. When submitting the application, the applicant's photograph is taken and his/her fingerprints and signature are electronically recorded. For applicants under 6 years, please bring a passport photo with you, as it is not possible to take a photo at the consulate in case of small children under 6 years.
The application can only be submitted by appointment. You can book an appointment on this page. When booking, you must select the "Private passport" case type. A separate appointment must be booked for each client.
The following documents must be presented when submitting the application:
- a valid identity document (valid identity card or valid passport or valid Hungarian driving licence, address card)
- a document proving Hungarian citizenship (valid Hungarian identity card or Hungarian passport or naturalisation document expired not more than one year ago or citizenship certificate expired not more than three years ago);
- In case of applicants under 18 years both parents shall be present at the application, or one parent shall be present and a handwritten declaration of consent from the other parent shall be presented. A sample declaration can be found here in Hungarian. In case of divorced parents an official document shall be presented on the exclusive parental rights. In case of the death of one of the parents, a death certificate shall be presented.
No emergency procedure at the consulate. The consulate uses the same booking system as the one available to clients, so we cannot give you an earlier appointment even if the document is lost or stolen. It is everyone's responsibility to check the validity of their documents.
If any of the conditions of the application are missing, the application will be refused and you will have to reappear to submit the application. A new appointment must be booked, and the consulate cannot offer an emergency appointment in this case.
2. Duration of the passport procedure, receipt of the requested passport
You can request to receive the passport as follows:
- postal delivery to a Hungarian address (extra fees will be charged),
- delivery at a document office in Hungary (extra fees will be charged),
- personal delivery at the consulate in Brussels or at the consular reception desks in Luxembourg,
The completed passports are delivered to the consulate from Hungary at fixed intervals, and the passport usually arrives at the consulate within 5-8 weeks. The consulate then processes the passports in the order of arrival and notifies the clients.
Please take this period into account when planning your travel, bearing in mind that the procedure may take longer. It is recommended that you do not purchase tickets (airline, bus, etc.) before receiving your passport, as the consulate cannot be held responsible for any damage that may result.
If the applicant does not have a valid passport, identity card, citizenship certificate or naturalisation document at the time of application and the identity and address registration system does not confirm his/her citizenship, an ex officio citizenship verification must be carried out. In such cases, the passport procedure is extended by an average of 5 months. Please note that the citizenship verification may take even longer.
Important! When submitting an application for a private passport, if the applicant is not registered in the Register of Personal Data and Addresses or has a passive status, i.e. does not have a Hungarian address card, the procedure for registering his/her personal and address data must be initiated ex officio.
